The first example, SargaTrack, is an app created by Samuel Fourmy, who lives in Martinique. It gathers and brings together information about sargassum, including observations, floating mats, strandings, quantities, frequency and hazards. The aim of this community-driven app is to help build a better-informed and better-coordinated Caribbean, where every citizen can contribute to protecting the coastline.

Reports accompanied by photographs, locations and dates make it possible to track sargassum in real time.

For a thriving, connected coastline

Once the data has been collected, the mats are shown on an interactive map that evolves according to the extent of sargassum near the shore and farther offshore. Indicators of approaching sargassum are provided, although they cannot predict strandings with 100% reliability.

SargaTrack also brings together essential information from various websites and sources, producing a sufficiently detailed overview to pass the data on to the relevant authorities, elected officials and the services expected to respond effectively on the ground (https://sargatrack.com).

The second example follows a logical sequence: after observation come collection and processing. Sargawatt was founded in Martinique by Matthieu Bergot to address the challenge of collecting large volumes of sargassum at the right cost while respecting ecosystems, combining coastal protection with industrial valorization.

This approach therefore has a stronger commercial focus than the first. It is aimed not only at local authorities and tourism businesses, but also at collection operators and industrial companies that might find ways to turn this material into a valuable resource.

Collecting effectively

These foul-smelling, toxic brown algae can become an accessible, usable biomass, provided they are handled in the right way. This is what Sargawatt offers local stakeholders, whether industrial companies, laboratories or other project developers looking for a reliable, traceable material suited to their processes (Sargawatt).

This is a far cry from experiments in making cardboard from dried seaweed in a kitchen. Many other projects deserve credit for moving things forward, even if they do nothing to solve the growing problem of sargassum invasions. The ball has always been in the court of the relevant local and national authorities, who show year after year just how much they struggle to respond.
